Vaccine clinics are geared towards the needs of the general population. For clients and caregivers there are certain needs and accommodations that should be considered when making the decision to get the COVID-19 vaccination as well as challenges to prepare for that could present themselves in the time travelling to and at the clinic. In this video, proactive strategies tailored to this unique experience are suggested to facilitate a successful vaccine experience.
TIPS AND INFORMATION
Considerations
- Know the person you support and their needs
- Weigh risks when considering getting the vaccine (burdens but also benefits)
- Connect with your family doctor if you have questions
- Start planning now, together with the person with IDD
- Think of strategies that have helped in the past
- If you need support, reach out to the clinic in advance
- Create a positive experience, as much as possible, with 2nd dose in mind
On Route
- Plan your journey and possible alternate routes
- Dress for the elements (prepare to wait outdoors for a time)
- Ensure forms are filled out prior to attending the clinic and you have your ID, if needed
- Use visuals/timers and social stories to help explain and prepare
- Bring along preferred activities or items (i.e., toys/games, electronic devices, edibles, etc.)
In the Clinic
- Find a separate space, if possible, to reduce anxiety
- Use preferred items (see section 1)
- If helpful, use a stress ball or other sensory items
- Ask doctor/nurse about approximate times to share these tools with the client
