“My name is Ashan Fernando, and I’m a member of the Self-Advocacy Council and the Board of Directors at Surrey Place. I joined the council last year because I want to speak up for people with developmental, physical and mental disabilities and help people find support. The council is a place to discuss matters that are important to you, share your suggestions and show your passion for advocacy! I’m proud to take on leadership roles in the council, show my incentive and bring peer support. We ensure everyone feels accepted, respected and heard – no one is left out! I love how we all have great relationships and are a positive group, which makes me happy and excited to work together. Volunteering is important because we all need to do our part to help those who need support. I enjoy helping my community and building great relationships through volunteering.”
